TARASEC APP

Privacy policy

This policy explains how the TaraSec Android app and connected TaraSec services handle information.

Effective: 4 September 2026

Who is responsible

TaraSec is developed and operated by Taransvar, a Norwegian nonprofit organization. Participating hotspot operators remain responsible for their own networks and any separate local records they maintain.

Information the service may process

Depending on the features you use, TaraSec may process:

  • account information such as an email address, phone number, TaraSec identifier and authentication-provider identifier;
  • authentication and security information such as session tokens, account verification state and approved manager relationships;
  • technical network and device information needed to identify a hotspot session, connect a device, diagnose access and protect the service;
  • credit balance, hotspot price, data usage, accounting entries and transaction references;
  • gateway ownership, hosted-connection agreements and management actions when those features are used;
  • security observations, diagnostics and assistance requests deliberately submitted through TaraSec services.

Nearby Wi-Fi and location permission

Android protects access to nearby Wi-Fi scan results with a location permission. TaraSec requests foreground location permission so the app can find nearby TaraSec Wi-Fi networks and compare their signal information. The app does not request background-location permission. TaraSec does not need a continuous history of your physical movements for this feature.

How information is used

Information is used to authenticate accounts, provide and account for hotspot access, show balances and usage, locate participating hotspots, manage approved gateways, prevent abuse, diagnose failures and operate TaraSec's collaborative security functions.

Identity providers and participating networks

If you choose Google or Facebook sign-in, that provider processes the sign-in under its own terms and provides TaraSec with the identity information required to complete authentication. A participating hotspot and its operator process the technical information necessary to provide network access. Hosting, communications and infrastructure providers may process limited information on Taransvar's behalf where required to operate the service.

Storage and security

The app stores authentication credentials using Android-protected local storage where supported. TaraSec uses access controls and encrypted transport for Internet-facing account services. A captive portal may use a local, unencrypted connection between your device and the hotspot gateway; account handoff codes are designed to be temporary and limited in scope.

Retention

Account and operational information is retained only while needed to provide the service, protect users, resolve disputes, maintain required accounting records or meet legal obligations. Security and accounting records may need to be retained after an account is deleted; where possible they are separated from information that directly identifies the former account holder.

Your choices and rights

You can deny the location permission, although nearby-hotspot discovery will then be limited. You may request access, correction or deletion of your account information. See the TaraSec account-deletion page.

Children

TaraSec is not presently directed to children. A future service intended for children will require a separate review of consent, safeguarding and Google Play requirements before release.

Changes

This page will be updated when TaraSec's production data handling changes. Material changes will be reflected by a new effective date.
